Plymouth Green Party stands with people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in our city, to end all forms of racism.
We are proud of our beautiful city, it’s people and many achievements of Plymouthians. However, recent events remind us that not everything in Plymouth’s past and present is a cause for celebration. Now is the time to be honest about this history, not to ‘sanitise’ or ‘remove’ history, but simply to tell the whole story.
That is why we support calls from BAME residents to:
- Provide better education about our history, beginning with interpretation panels for statues of figures associated with slavery.
- To decolonise the school curriculum.
We also back Greens of Colour who have called for an independent inquiry into the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic People.
As we look to a post-COVID-19 future, we must recognise that we can’t go back to the “business as usual” that created an unequal and unfair society.
Most importantly, we need to amplify Black voices, listen, educate ourselves and join the fight for a better world for people of colour everywhere.
