The Green Party can confirm that after a motion put to members in the past two days, as a local party we have voted in favour of standing a Parliamentary candidate in the Plymouth Sutton & Devonport constituency for the 2017 snap election.
Dan Sheaff will be Green candidate in Sutton & Devonport, joining Josh Pope in Plymouth Moor View and Win Scutt in South West Devon as the other candidates covering areas in Plymouth.
The Plymouth Green Party has worked tirelessly in the weeks since the election was called to try and arrange an electoral pact of some form with the Labour Party, which may have involved the Green Party standing down in Sutton & Devonport. We appreciate however, that local Labour parties not just in Plymouth but across the country have their hands tied, and we are well aware of the situation in which Plymouth Labour is in. We do not wish to be a negative reflection on their local party, nor their candidate for the constituency, Luke Pollard. No more is it a rejection of the concept of political alliances, which we may well explore again in the future.
Although this is not a decision that has been taken lightly, we hope that voters of all political ideals will appreciate how we have exhausted every possible outcome, and put forward any possible deal to the membership to be voted on in the way true grassroots democracy intended.
We are now looking forward to pressing on with presenting our alternative Green vision to the people all over Plymouth and giving everyone who wants to vote Green the chance to do so.
We hope to update you with more news of our campaigns (including fundraising) very soon.
